Chinese B Curriculum

Our consultant, Professor Y. W. Zhang has been working hard this summer in collaboration with BCIS Chinese language teachers in order to compile and edit text books of the highest standard for all grades. The text books, which provide a unique approach to Chinese language teaching, are already being utilized at BCIS for this academic year. Experts carefully selected resources from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, choosing only the best and most appropriate materials from each source. We are sure that our students will love and therefore benefit immensely from these up-to-date textbooks. We aim to create an ongoing positive and productive platform for Chinese language and culture.
BCIS offers Chinese B classes for foreign students as a second language.
Stage 1
Use the Kuaile Hanyu set of textbooks and workbooks from Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters)
I. Target Group: Beginner Chinese
II. Teaching Objectives:
Students functioning within stage 1:
- Can understand basic language materials related to common daily settings;
- Can repeat, recite and reproduce words or sentences with fair accuracy;
- Begin to develop confidence and interest in learning the Chinese language;
- Have some preliminary knowledge of Chinese learning and communicative abilities used in guided situations;
- Gain introductory Chinese cultural knowledge and acquire preliminary cross-cultural awareness and international perspectives.
1.Chinese Phonology
Students will:
- Know that Chinese is a tonal language and Mandarin has four tones and a neutral tone;
- Be able to identify, read and write down basic sounds of Chinese Phonetic Alphabet;
- Be able to spell whole syllables.
2.Chinese Characters and Words
Students will:
- Recognize strokes and stroke order of characters;
- Recognize basic components of characters and radicals;
- Understand the relationships between characters and words;
- Recognize 100 words related to daily life and school life, and master 40 basic Chinese characters toward proficiency in the four skills areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing.
3.Grammar
Students will:
- Know and master basic word order and common sentence patterns;
- Know and master common nouns, numerals, measure words, verbs, adjectives, personal pronouns and demonstratives.
4. Communicative Abilities
Students will:
- Master basic and simple ways of social interactions;
- Know simple topics related to personal and everyday life.
5. Integrated Learning
- Students will know basic Chinese cultural knowledge such as: cities, populations and festivals.
III. Assignment and Examination:
- Written homework: 10-20 minutes everyday;
- Oral evaluation: 6 rhymes, 3 Tang poetries, and verbal sentences according to the teacher's prompts ;
- Written evaluation: classroom tests and final exam.
Stage 2
Use the Kuaile Hanyu set of textbooks and workbooks from Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters)
I. Target Group: foreign students that have passed the YCT (level 1) test, or other tests with an equivalent score/level
II. Teaching Objectives:
Students functioning within Stage 2:
- Can understand and begin to master basic language materials related to common daily settings;
- Can repeat, recite and reproduce words or sentences with fair accuracy;
- Have some confidence and interest in learning the Chinese language;
- Have more preliminary knowledge of Chinese learning and communicative abilities used in guided situations;
- Gain introductory Chinese cultural knowledge and acquire more preliminary cross-cultural awareness and international perspectives.

- Master basic expressions to describe a person or an abject.
4.Communicative Abilities
Students will:
- Master basic and simple ways of social interactions;
- Know simple topics related to personal and everyday life.
5. Integrated Learning
- Students will know basic Chinese cultural knowledge as: food, geography and family.
III. Assignment and Examination:
- Written homework: 10-20 minutes everyday;
- Oral evaluation: 10rhymes, 5 Tang poetries, and verbal sentences according to the teacher's prompts;
- Written evaluation: classroom tests, YCT (level II) writing test and YCT(beginner level) speaking test.
Stage 3
Use the Kuaile Hanyu set of textbooks and workbooks from Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters)
I. Target Group: foreign students which has past YCT (level II) test, or other tests with an equivalent score/level
II. Teaching Objectives:
Students functioning within Stage 3:
- Can understand and begin to master basic language materials related to common daily settings;
- Can produce simple sentence structures, provide simple descriptions and exchange some basic information;
- Have confidence and interest in learning the Chinese language;
- Have more preliminary knowledge of Chinese learning and communicative abilities used in guided situations;
- Gain introductory Chinese cultural knowledge and acquire more preliminary cross-cultural awareness and international perspectives.
1. Chinese Phonology
Students will:
- Know the importance of pronunciation in learning Chinese language;
- Master some tone changes;
- Use appropriate pronunciation and intonation in everyday conversation.
2. Chinese Characters and Words
Students will:
- Understand the relationships between characters and words;
- Identify sounds, forms and meanings of Chinese characters;
- Recognize 400 words related to daily life and school life, and master 140 basic Chinese characters toward proficiency in the four skills areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing.
3. Grammar
Students will:
- Know and master sentence patterns and orders of special questions;
- Know and master expressions of time and place;
- Know structures and functions of attributes.
4. Communicative Abilities
Students will:
- Accomplish simple daily interactions;
- Know topics of family members, personal interest and campus life.
5. Integrated Learning
- Students will know basic Chinese cultural knowledge as: famous Chinese personalities and their background information.
III. Assignment and Examination:
- Written homework: 15-25 minutes everyday;
- Oral evaluation: 10rhymes, 5 Tang poetries, verbal sentences according to teacher's prompts;
- Written evaluation: classroom tests, YCT (level III) writing test .
Stage 4
Use the Kuaile Hanyu set of textbooks and workbooks from Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters)
I. Targets: foreign students which has past YCT (level II) test, or other tests with an equivalent score/level
II. Teaching Objectives:
Students functioning within Stage 4:
- Can understand and master more basic language materials related to common daily settings in a better way;
- Can produce more simple sentence structures, provide simple descriptions and exchange some basic information;
- Have confidence and interest in learning the Chinese language;
- Have more preliminary knowledge of Chinese learning and communicative abilities used in guided situations;
- Gain introductory Chinese cultural knowledge and acquire more preliminary cross-cultural awareness and international perspectives.

- Know and master sentences expressions of location and wishes;
- Know structures and functions of adverbials.
4. Communicative Abilities
Students will:
- Accomplish simple daily interactions;
- Know topics of family members, personal interest and campus life.
5. Integrated Learning
- Students will know basic Chinese cultural and historical knowledge as: famous Chinese personalities and their background information.
III. Assignment and Examination:
- Written homework: 15-25 minutes everyday;
- Oral evaluation: 10rhymes, 5 Tang poetries, verbal sentences according to teacher's prompts;
- Written evaluation: classroom tests, YCT (level IV) writing test and YCT(intermediate level) speaking test.
Remarks:
The different levels of the BCIS Chinese B Curriculum are similar to some of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages (CLPS) , the Common European Framework of Reference (CEF) , new HSK and new YCT; details are as follows:
